In the summer, Sterling North finds in the woods an infant raccoon kit. He takes the raccoon home, keeps it as a pet, and names it Rascal. He has many adventures with the raccoon and grows very fond of it. But when spring and the mating season comes, Sterling is forced to take Rascal away, to the wild, where he belongs.

Recommendation reasons:
This is an interesting and good book because it is written in a POV that is pretty much as different as possible as life right now. For example, he had a lot of pets, such as a Saint Bernard, woodchucks, skunks, crows, and of course the raccoon. He also explored the nature around him, and I know you have probably never so much as stepped off a hiking trail. People had much more freedom back then, and safety was far from being first in their minds. Having fun was a lot more important and if you tried it, then you would see why they chose that.Favorite parts:
One of my favorite parts is when Sterling’s father has to go testify as a witness in Northern Wisconsin and they go on a 2-week trip there. In the trip, he and Rascal discover new places and roam in the woods near the Brule River. It was very peaceful, and things were perfect, and you will get the notion throughout the book, but especially in this part, that life back then was so much better than it is now.Created on Sat Jul 22 2023
